2025-2026高二学英语报套题16

Lily was a student. She worked hard and was always a straight-A student. However, during one semester, her life changed. Her parents lost their jobs, and the family faced a heavy financial burden (负担). Worse still, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, which left Lily feeling overwhelmed. The stress made it hard for her to focus on her studies, and her grades dropped significantly.

One morning, when she pushed open the door, her usual seat in the front row was empty—she hadn’t dared to claim it in weeks. Instead, she slid into a back-row seat, keeping her head down.

Actually, the moment Lily stepped into the classroom, Mr Thompson’s eyes stayed on her—longer than usual. The faint shadows under her eyes, her drained (筋疲力尽的) face—none of it escaped his notice. After class, as the other students filed out, Mr Thompson approached her desk, his voice softening. “Lily, are you … doing all right?” he asked. The sudden concern broke her like a tidal wave, and she couldn’t help pouring out her recent struggles to Mr Thompson.

Mr Thompson listened without interrupting. When she finally fell silent, wiping at her eyes, he leaned down slightly, giving her a hug. A firm, steady one. The hug made her aware of how long it had been since someone had held her this way.

“In any case, your health comes first,” he said, keeping a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “If you need extra time, or if you just want to talk—call me. Anytime.” For the first time in weeks, Lily felt the weight on her chest lighten. Lily felt a renewed sense of hope and made up her mind to get everything back on track. “Mr Thompson,” she said, “thank you.”

From that day on, Lily fought to reclaim her life. She struggled to balance her personal life and schoolwork, determined to achieve good results in her final exam. But determination alone couldn’t undo (弥补) weeks of missed lessons. Every catch-up session left her more aware of how far behind she’d fallen.

As the end of the semester approached, Lily’s anxiety grew. Having detected Lily’s concern about her academic struggles and financial burden of the family, not only did Mr. Thompson provide individualized tutoring, but he assisted Lily with the application for a scholarship. With Mr. Thompson’s practical instruction and her hardened resolve, the following days witnessed Lily investing enormous effort in reviewing for the exam. As expected, the exam day arrived.
